Today Microsoft announced they will be increasing the maximum number of participants in a Teams private chat from 100 to 250 users in response to requests from customers. This change will be gradually rolled out around the globe from early to mid-May.

It is worth noting that if a user has more than 20 people in a chat, the following chat features are turned off automatically:

  • Outlook automatic replies and Teams status messages
  • Typing indicator
  • Video and audio calling
  • Screen sharing
  • Read receipts

These limitations are already in place, and there is no change with this coming update.
